As we get back into the routine of taking outfit pictures (we seriously dropped the ball for the first month or so of summer) we have enjoyed exploring our new little neighborhood. It doesn't have the best first impression but as you start to look closer you notice it's little charms- the brick roads, the friendly neighbors, the cute little houses. We are really starting to love it here.

I have been getting some good use out of my clogs these past few days. They are the perfect shoes for the summer time and I can wear them to work! Not only do they have closed toes, they also don't feel that much like high heels so I can get away with tromping around in them for a solid chunk of time. They only thing I dislike about my job is the fact that buying sandals seems more pointless-since I will never really be able to wear them. I guess I can use that as an excuse to buy more clogs though...

We completely acknowledge that we have been horrible about doing outfit posts lately. Are we just a bit lazy sometimes? Maybe. (Thanks for the encouragement, Mary!)

The weather has been seriously perfect the last few days. With highs of only 90 degrees and lows around 60 we have been walking around the neighborhood like crazy! This has made professor especially happy, since he is usually involved in said walks. His little legs can only go so far, so we aren't able to go on extended walks. (Though I did take him on a two miler the other day.. I ended up carrying him for a good half mile)

Our summer outfits are pretty simple usually. Breezy tops, tanks, shorts, and our clogs get the most use! Leah has literally been living in her cut off Levi shorts...

It appears as though I have a color scheme for this summer-yellow, light blue, gray, yes please! I actually have been wearing a lot of coral these days as well.

1. A fancy way to display eggs in this porcelain egg carton from furbish studio.

2. I have been dreaming of getting a record player for a little while now. I flipped through the stacks of discount records at amoeba music in L.A. picturing myself... a summer day, the breeze billowing in through the windows, the music stops and I walk over to flip it over in a sweet little summer dress (probably #8)- it seems all to perfect of a dream to let go. Therefore I need this crosley record player from urban outfitters, right?

3. I am getting pretty dang tired of carting my journal and lunch to and from work in hand due to the size of my itty bitty bag. Don't get me wrong, I love the tiny purse that my boyfriend bought for me... I just need a little bit more space sometimes. This bag from Mod Cloth would be perfect, plus it would come in handy once I am student teaching in the fall! 

4. As Kansas heats up I start wearing dresses more and more, clingy fabrics are just obnoxious. This dress from She Inside would be perfect for that reason, plus I love the graphic print and the black and white!

5. Hunter Boots... enough said probably. Everyone wants them..everyone needs them. They are lying if they say otherwise. 

6. I'm all about my Kansas roots, I love the prairie and those prairie grazers. This bison ring would look super cute on my finger! 

7. IKAT and good for people? I am in. I love these Toms strappy wedges! 

8. Staying true to my Kansas self yet again, I love this yellow embroidered sunflower dress from She Inside!

printed deer shirt DIY

Snow has seriously been dumping from the heavens here in Kansas which has led to some perfect, class free afternoons. This of course is the perfect weather for snuggling up indoors wrapped in blankets, sipping coffee or hot cocoa (we must be inclusive of everyone, not everyone is a coffee drinker we've heard), and getting your craft on. This week we decided to make these awesome "printed" deer shirts that were super easy.

You'll need: a deer head stencil, fabric paint (we used acrylic which should work similarly), a paint brush, and an old shirt (we would also suggest a piece of cardboard or something to slip between the two layers of shirt).



First you will need to figure out your stencil. We suggest you do one of two options:

1. befriend an art major, or become one yourself, to draw you a picture of a deer. (I drew ours)
2. print a silhouette or outline of a deer off of your computer and use that instead.



Next center your stencil on your shirt and trace around it. Erin used a lighter colored paint so she traced hers in pencil so it wouldn't show through. I used a sharpie because I did mine in black and knew it wouldn't show.

Once you have your stencil traced you can begin painting! Make sure to go very slowly and do it as neatly as possible.




Once it is completely dry you can style it however you want! I styled mine with a crochet skirt, some black tights, and a pair of oxfords. Erin wore hers with a grey a-line skirt and crochet tights. They can seriously be worn with anything! I wore mine around with leggings and slippers the day after... Sometimes when it is cold and snowy I feel less inclined to change clothes...oops.

DIY elbow patches

Phew! We made it through our first major holiday on the blog. Erin and I weren't quite sure how we were going to do (we tend to be slight grinches to most holidays), but I think we did alright and we had fun!

Let me start by saying this is my new favorite shirt and you should make one too. It was so easy to add elbow patches on to my shirt I am surprised I hadn't done it yet, I had been wanting to so long!

You'll need: Leather (we found ours at Hobby Lobby), leather sewing needles, embroidery floss, scissors, and an old long sleeve t-shirt that needs a little extra love.

 

Put on your long sleeve shirt and make a mark on your elbows. Make sure that the sleeve is sitting the way it usually would when worn so that your elbow patch will be in the correct spot. Do this to both sleeves.

 

Then cut out two ovals out of your leather mine were about 5 inches long and 2 inches wide. Then place your ovals so that the center of your oval is on top of the "x" on your sleeve and sew around the outside. I actually found it a little bit difficult to push the needle through so I used the floor to push it, rather than my thumb.

I seriously am so in love with my new shirt. Now I can rock the grandpa style 24/7, woo!

heart knee sock DIY

We have to admit, we both generally aren't the kind of people who get super into holidays. I think this blog might be changing us though... And to kick off our new selves we are having two full weeks of valentine-y goodness. We showed off our ability to throw together Valentines outfits yesterday, here is a cute Valentines craft for you to try.

We love fun printed tights and socks and loved the idea of making our own. Turns out, it is super easy to make heart knee socks! Here is how:

You'll need: the fabric of your choice, a pair of thigh high socks, embroidery floss, scissors, and a needle & thread.

Start by cutting two hearts out of your fabric, mine were about 3 inches by 3 inches.

Next you'll place them on the knee of your socks. Make sure that they are in the exact right place before you start sewing. You can pin them in place and put them on to test them out if you wish. 

Once you have your heart right where you want it, you can begin sewing around the outside. I slid a bit of cardboard between the two layers so that I wouldn't accidentally sew the two sides together. It helped a lot. Tie a knot and then you are done! So easy, right?

Once you are done you can wear them around in all your valentine-y adorableness, you can even match them to the fabric of your dress like we did for Erin. Doesn't she look so cute?
