DIY macrame dream catcher

You'll need: One embroidery hoop,embroidery floss, white yarn, hemp, scissors, & wood veneer feathers This dream catcher turned out to be super fun and actually really easy. First I followed the instructions found on this website for creating the weaving inside the hoop. I only used one piece of my embroidery hoop so that hopefully I can do another craft with the other piece! I added the pink in the middle to add a pop of color (and because I ran out of white.... as I say in my art classroom "turn a boo boo into something!"). Once my dream catcher was completed, I wrapped hemp around the outside of the hoop to cover up all of the wood. I used a thicker grade of hemp for this section, though you could use thinner hemp. I left a section on the bottom to tie on my yarn.  When creating the macrame section of my dream catcher I tied on a few pieces of hemp and a few pieces of different colored embroidery floss-pink, hot pink, and yellow- to add some variety. I then filled the remaining space with long strips of white yarn. I then tied knots to create a macrame effect. I started with a knot in the middle and then did the two furthest outside knots so that I would have a guide for where my other knots should go. I did two layers (this also prevents tangling!!). Once I was finished I added some wood veneer feathers to the bottom for a finishing touch! I just loved the way it turned out. It looks really nice hanging in my bedroom. Plus while I was working on it Erin and I couldn't help but run around the house singing "Mac-ra-uh-uh-uh-uh-may" like how they pronounce Macklemore in his song Can't Hold Us. We love Macklemore. DIY embroidered valentines

Erin and I seem to be pretty big procrastinators these days. Perhaps you are like us and haven't started working on your valentines cards until the very last minute. If so, you should make some of these pretty embroidered valentines! They are super cute and very easy.

You'll need: scrap fabric in valentines colors, paper (preferably card stock), scissors, and a needle & embroidery floss.

 

Start by folding your paper perfectly in half, as you normally would when making a valentines card. Then cut out a rectangle of fabric for your background. It should be a little smaller than your card (or your paper folded in half).

Next, once you have a general design in mind for your card, cut out all shapes from other fabrics that you have and embroider those on. I just did a quick running stitch around the sides of my hearts. 

If you want to add any writing, I would suggest writing your phrase in pencil first, then embroidering your words with a double running stitch.

Once your design is completely done and beautiful, align your rectangle of fabric onto your card and stitch it on! 

Then you are ready to write your ooey gooey, lovey dovey, heart felt message inside. Good luck crafting! -l.

heart knee sock DIY

We have to admit, we both generally aren't the kind of people who get super into holidays. I think this blog might be changing us though... And to kick off our new selves we are having two full weeks of valentine-y goodness. We showed off our ability to throw together Valentines outfits yesterday, here is a cute Valentines craft for you to try.

We love fun printed tights and socks and loved the idea of making our own. Turns out, it is super easy to make heart knee socks! Here is how:

You'll need: the fabric of your choice, a pair of thigh high socks, embroidery floss, scissors, and a needle & thread.

Start by cutting two hearts out of your fabric, mine were about 3 inches by 3 inches.

Next you'll place them on the knee of your socks. Make sure that they are in the exact right place before you start sewing. You can pin them in place and put them on to test them out if you wish. 

Once you have your heart right where you want it, you can begin sewing around the outside. I slid a bit of cardboard between the two layers so that I wouldn't accidentally sew the two sides together. It helped a lot. Tie a knot and then you are done! So easy, right?

Once you are done you can wear them around in all your valentine-y adorableness, you can even match them to the fabric of your dress like we did for Erin. Doesn't she look so cute?

embroidered napkin DIY

Boring napkins just aren't as fun as sassy embroidered napkins. Send your friends a message by handing them one of these handmade napkins. Here is the DIY:

You'll need: a bunch of scrap fabric, cardboard, scissors, pins, a pencil, embroidery floss, and a needle & thread (optional-a sewing machine).

First you'll need to make a template out of cardboard. I made all of my napkins 8.5 by 8.5 inches, though you can make them whatever size you like. Measure it on your cardboard and cut it out.

You'll need to decide how many napkins you'd like to make. I made six, but you can decide how many you want however you want. Maybe you want to make enough so each of your roommates can have one or enough for one for each person in your family. Once you have decided, cut out that many squares of plain white fabric and that many squares of fun printed fabric.

Next pick out phrases or words to write on each of your napkins. I chose slob, you're a mess, ew, gross, wipe your face, dirty, and clean yourself up. Write these (or your own) in cursive on each of the white squares in pencil. Then embroidered each of them. I did this while driving around Kansas over winter break. It was the perfect road trip activity.

Once all of your napkins are carefully embroidered, lay one face up and lay a printed square face down on top of it. Then sew around the edges leaving a small space on one edge to turn it right side out. Do this for all of your napkins.

Then turn each of them right side out and sew the gap closed.

For a special touch, I turned them inside out and embroidered around the edge to make it just a little cuter. You don't have to do this though. Then use and enjoy! They work great for little picnics outside, plus they are reusable so they are better for the earth, and we like that.
