Home for the Holidays: Part Two

Christmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas VacationChristmas Vacation

I made it safely back to Kansas via a redeye flight yesterday. It's nice to come back home ... from home. Here are some more snapshots from my trip with my family. We stayed in a beach house in Manzanita, Oregon for a couple nights. It was a beautiful area! The first day we were there we hiked to the very top of Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain which had an absolutely breathtaking view of the ocean! After taking a couple wrong turns and almost missing the path to the summit we eventually made it. Manzanita is in a gorgeous part of the coast. I'd never really been up to the north part of the Oregon coast, and it was just as beautiful as the rest! One of the beaches we stopped at required you to walk through a bit of old growth forest before you reached the sand.

I had a wonderful time at home and it was so good to see my friends, family, and Oregon again. It had been an entire year since I'd been back! Hopefully next time it won't be quite as long. Now I'm back in Kansas though, and can't get too settled in... I'm leaving for a choir tour to Germany this Friday!

It's a busy time of year, hope everyone is surviving!

Home for the Holidays

“It’s a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what’s changed is you.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

It's always nice to come back home to Salem. As soon as I walk out of the airport in Portland I can tell I'm home. The air just smells different.

Being home is a weird sudden break from the busy-ness of my life usually. I get to sleep in, but end up waking up early anyways because of the time change. I get to eat the wonderful food my mom cooks. My addiction to Oregon's awesome Goodwill's is fulfilled. I get to warm up by the wood stove. I get to be with my family and friends whom I haven't seen in a year. I have time to see them, and also time to spend alone and not feel guilty about not having enough time. Introvert's paradise.

This morning the fog on the river was so incredibly beautiful that I couldn't resist heading over to the walking bridge and getting some of these shots. Totally worth it. Hope everyone is enjoying their holidays and getting to spend time with the ones they love!

a texan thanksgiving

thanksgivingthanksgivingthanksgivingthanksgivingthanksgiving

Over Thanksgiving break I was lucky enough to get to drive down to Texas to stay with my sister for a few days! Landon and I drove down, and it was such a nice break from school. I only get to see Audrey once or twice a year so it is always really nice to get to spend time with her. This was the third year I've gotten to spend Thanksgiving with her down in Texas, that means it's a tradition now, right? Everyone was bemoaning the cold, but it was a wonderful change from freezing Kansas temperatures! It was just barely too cold to swim, which was a shame since Audrey just moved to a new apartment complex with a beautiful pool!

How was your Thanksgiving? Did you get a break?

You can see more photos from my trip (not just the beach!) on my instagram

erin's birthday

erins birthday erins birthday erins birthday erins birthday erins birthday erins birthday
We get so much joy out of planning parties-for some odd reason cleaning and decorating gives us a thrill. We spent all day Saturday hanging lights, tidying up our messy apartment (hey, life happens, right?), putting out refreshments, and adding little bits of decor here and there. We didn't want to go too overboard though, as both of us have pretty tight schedules and lots of things that fill up our free time. Our apartment looked and felt so wonderful by the time we were done. It really made us want to keep it that way! Though we realize that isn't always possible.
We had our guests bring over their favorite cocktail or drink to serve potluck style, which ended up being a huge hit! People brought supplies to make margaritas, butterbeer, whiskey sours, and so much more. We even created a fun drink for the evening that we can't wait to share!
It is always such a delight to get to spend time with the people you love. It was so wonderful to have everyone over to celebrate Erin's 21st.
Happy Birthday Erin. Congrats on finally being legal!

july, july

For some reason it is nearly impossible to sum up the entire month of July in just a couple of words. It went by so quickly and was stuffed so full of things that it is hard to be sure exactly what happened! A lot of small changes happened-piercings, hair cuts, cleaning out our wardrobes- and a lot of bigger changes happened too- we changed our name to a clover & a bee this month!
A lot of this month was spent with the ones we love, either at home snuggled up in our apartment, in other states at weddings, or in my case at home with my family. It is always so comforting to get to spend time with the people who love you!
A lot of big changes are coming our way in August! We both go back to school, Erin as a Senior, and me as a fifth year senior. We will be very busy with senior projects, assignments, and mandatory after class naps, though we are very excited to keep up our blog. A clover & a bee is such a nice escape from the weird outside world-sometimes you have to let out your creative sides!

the road trip - instagramed.

I've been home for almost a week now, but it's still fun to look back. Here is a summary of my trip through Instagram. I got to drive around the southern states, a LOT, eat tacos with my sister, try cactus snacks, sell a car on the side of the interstate, gawk at a whole bunch of succulents, eat my grandma's most wonderful pecan pie with pecans from their yard, go to South Padre Island, and go to Mexico for a couple hours.

It was just the right length of vacation that I had a wonderful time, but was definitely ready to come back home at the end.

Whats the best vacation you've had?

the great engle road trip: part II

After my parents came to Newton, we drove straight South to my sister's house in the very edge of Texas before heading over, all four of us, to Southern New Mexico for the family reunion. Our plan was to take Audrey's car along with my parents' so that she and I could drive back to Texas while my parents went straight home. We were about halfway to New Mexico when Audrey's car started smoking and eventually just completely died on the side of the road. This was in western Texas, and on the drive home we realized how lucky it was that we were only 20 miles away from a reasonably sized town. We managed to find a salvage business that was actually open on Sunday, and she sold it right there on the side of the road. Luckily, my parents were there so we all piled into their car and made the rest of the trip with no further problems.

My family is spread out all over the United States, so it makes getting everyone together in one place a but of an accomplishment. It had been five years since we were all together (we were only missing one cousin), so as you can imagine we had all changed a bit since the last time we were together. Its always weird to me seeing other people who have grown up with their extended family close by, when I only see mine every few years. What a difference distance makes! It is wonderful to see everyone when we can though.

We spent a lot of time just hanging around my grandparents house and enjoying each other's company. I was thoroughly impressed by my 12 year old cousin who can do a Rubik's Cube in 40-some seconds. Wednesday was the busiest day. In the morning a few of us went to the Living Desert just outside of town, which was basically like a zoo with local plants and animals. At the end was a giant greenhouse full of succulents from around the world - it was awesome. I walked in and knew immediately that if Leah had been there she probably would have peed her pants with excitement. That afternoon the whole family, except for my grandparents, went out to the Carlsbad Caverns, as per tradition. I'm pretty sure we go every time we are in Carlsbad - and for good reason. They're impressive! We hiked down and around, and then the cousins and my dad all decided to hike back out, something we've never done before. We had a little bit of a race against the clock, to make sure that they wouldn't close the gate on us, but we booked it on out of there! Imagine speedwalking uphill for a mile to get out of a cave. That was about it. As we reached the mouth of the cave though, we saw this giant beam of light shining in because of the angle of the sun. It lit up the whole first area and was just brilliant. I've never seen something like that before.

We finished up that day with a picnic that my grandparents met us out there for, and then watching the bat flight out of the cave in the evening. I forever have negative connotations with the bat flight because once when I was much younger we ran across a rattlesnake on the way back from it, and it is forever stuck in my mind. It was kind of cool, but there were less bats this year because the drought is bringing their numbers down, sadly. While we were waiting for the bat flight to start we were entertained by my dad convincing my younger cousins to lay out in the desert and try and lure in vultures.

Thursday morning Audrey and I had to drive 6 hours extra to pick up a rental car to get us back to Texas, but we made it! I got Friday to hang out with her, and we went to South Padre Island and enjoyed the beach before I have to go back to landlocked Kansas. This morning we went to Mexico for about two hours and did a little shopping, and I fly back to Kansas this afternoon.

Overall it was a wonderful vacation, but I am excited to head back home!
