Andy Warhol inspired succulent planters

My new golden rule is to never live in a town that does not have a Target. It seems silly but I keep finding out that I am missing things! For instance when Missoni did that adorable collection for Target? I had no idea and missed it. Then these Andy Warhol inspired soup cans came out for a limited time and I found out too late! It broke my little art student heart. I vow to never miss adorable things at Target ever again.  But like many things, it is possible to DIY them despite what you might think. I looked all over the internet until I found these adorable free print outs from Katy Day Photography and I did just that. I printed them, glued them onto my cans, added a layer of mod podge, and voila! Beautiful planters for my succulents and I couldn't be happier. Crux Painted Terracotta Pot

I am incredibly into fixing up my old terracotta pots with a little bit of paint-if you haven't noticed. I made a few in the past on our blog, but hadn't tried out one of my new favorite design trends, crux! It was so easy to do! I just first applied two coats of white to the entire outside and finished it off with some quick brushes with black paint. I love the way it turned out! Almost all of my little plants have found their way inside thanks to project "bring the plants inside." I only have a few more projects to go on this series! chalkboard paint terracotta pots

If you have been following our blog for awhile you have probably figured out that we are sort of suckers for projects that use chalkboard paint. I just love the way chalkboards look and feel (perhaps it is the teacher in me ;) ) so I love any excuse to add chalkboard paint to a surface. Our bring the plants inside project was the perfect excuse to whip that can of paint out yet again.

I think my favorite part about these two new pots is that they will never look the same! As I get bored with them or as they inevitably get water on the outside thus smudging my beautiful designs I can change easily wipe them clean and start again! And of course, professor was glad to step in and help out during the photo taking process. That little stinker sat right in the background of my shot... I thought it was cute though.

DIY hemp and yarn coil pots

Our first project from our Bring the Plants Inside Project has to be one of our very favorites. Start it out with a bang, am I right? We loved these rope coil pots from Anthropologie but knew we could not afford it. Our main goal of this project is to create ways to bring our plants inside on a tight budget-which means that $70 pots are just out of the question. So here we go-how to make your very own Anthropologie inspired hemp and yarn coil pot for less than 10 dollars.
You'll Need: hemp, yarn, an old pillowcase or sheet, a hot glue gun, a plastic pot, and a plant to put in it.  When I first pictured myself making this DIY I figured it would be pretty difficult, which ended up not being the case! Once you get started it is actually pretty easy but a little bit time consuming. I started by cutting an old pillowcase in a spiral so that I had one long strip of fabric. The wider that you cut your strips the thicker your coils will be. For my yellow pot my strip was about 5 inches wide and 4 feet long. Once you have your strip of fabric you will want to cut several pieces of hemp and yarn all the same length. I then began by twisting my fabric and wrapping a piece of hemp around it, adding a dot of glue about every inch or so. I then did a strip of yarn and alternated back and forth between the two until my entire strip of fabric was covered.  I then took my plastic pot and put a layer of glue on the side of it and a layer on top of each coil as I spiraled up. This will ensure that everything stays in place! I really enjoyed the way these came out! I am thinking about making another one here shortly. Perhaps with some blues? As the weather gets colder its finally time to start bringing my succulent propagation experiment inside. I seriously started around 30 plants that I now have to find a place for inside! The only problem is that I can't afford to go out and buy nice pots for all of my little guys (who can?). My goal for these next couple of weeks is to gather ideas from around the internet and from my brain and create budget friendly versions in order to re-pot all of my plants! I have so many ideas, it is going to be so much fun! Stay tuned...
