over the weekend: a much needed retreat

A miracle happened to us this week. Yes-a miracle. While Erin was working one day a lady walked in and offered her two free tickets to a concert at Bartlett Arboretum for this Sunday. It was seriously the perfect timing as we have been in need of a little break from our day to day lives. Plus we love the arboretum and can't resist a visit from time to time.
It ended up being the perfect day. We woke up and moseyed around the house for a little while before packing up our picnic (in our adorable DIY picnic basket) and hitting the road. The drive ended up being a wonderful time to blast some Miley and talk about all of our big blog ideas. We even stopped for a little coffee at Meads in Wichita on the way.
Bartlett Arboretum is such a beautiful place. We have been there a few times before and we were recognized as the "Bethel Beauties" who came to do a vintage photo shoot the summer before. We set up our picnic of wine, cheese and crackers, and strawberries in a big field to listen to some music. It was fun to wander around the beautiful arboretum and relax all day.
How do you relax on the weekend?

restyled picnic basket

The other night I was laying in bed reading Gentri Lee's blog post about going on a picnic in her family and for some reason my brain suddenly clicked (perhaps it was the adorable picnic basket and her pink headband-we can't be sure). I ran into the other room and grabbed my old crummy picnic basket (seen here) and immediately got to work. At that moment I didn't seem to mind that it was already 30 minutes past my bedtime and I had to teach children in the morning-this was important. I grabbed my paints and some paint brushes and got to work. I did about two coats of pink around the outside in order to cover up the dark green. I then took an old sharpie and drew the shape I wanted on the lid of my basket and filled it in with white paint. I have been loving black and white geometric prints for some time so I decided to do some triangles on the top. I love the way it turned out.
The nice thing about this basket is that I found it at a thrift store for only 50 cents. It is nice to not have to worry too much about screwing something up because it didn't cost very much initially. You can take some pretty crummy thrift finds and turn them into gold, in my opinion. Yes, this basket may still have a few dings and bumps, but hey, it adds a little character right?
Generally picnics may be thought of as more of a spring activity but the weather has been so beautiful lately and perfect for picnics! Just make sure to grab a blanket if you are going to be out past dark perhaps for some star gazing?
what thrifted gems have you fixed up lately?

(You could ask me how I managed to get the cutest, most photogenic dog in the world and I would have to reply I don't know, I guess I just got lucky!)

cheap chinese take out break

Untitled Untitled Untitled Untitled Untitled

We spend a lot of time cooking up a storm in this little apartment of ours. We love trying new recipes and eating delicious foods. Every once in awhile though, when our taste buds are craving chinese after seeing Erin's boyfriend eat it, and when Erin has a weirdly early dinner break at work, we just can't help ourselves. We give in to the sweet and spicy goodness of Chinese take out-enjoying every bite out of that Styrofoam box. And hey, if you only have an hour and it is a nice day outside, you may as well have a picnic with your greasy goodness, right?!?

What is your guilty pleasure?

Last week we teamed up with our friend Sara for a fun summer photoshoot to promote some new items at Mojo's Coffee Bar. Erin and I have both worked at Mojo's for a few years now, but we promise that all opinions are our own and have no influence from our boss:) Mojo's is an adorable little coffee shop in North Newton, Kansas that offers the best coffee around!

Recently Mojo's began to sell Cuppow lids that convert your everyday mason jar into a fun new sippy cup! They make carrying out cold drinks so much more convenient! We took them on a picnic with our pup and had a wonderful time sipping on iced toddys from Mojo's.

If you get a chance, you should stop by Mojo's and check out their Cuppow lids and iced toddys!
